| Customer Reviews: This laptop kicks butt!!! December 11, 2009 P. Haines (Western NY USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my 3rd new aw series laptop. I travel with one, have one in my office, and one at home. They are all for different uses and if my traveler gets smashed I can have one of the others NDA'd to me. My life is easier with the big screen and great keyboard. I have tried others and the only one that comes close is the toshiba. But if anyone asks, I do have a preference to sony products. They have great support and are pro active in helping their customers. Definitely a recommended laptop.
Sony Vaio 18.4-Inch Short Laptop Review December 7, 2009 Mark Allen Baker (Detroit, MI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like this laptop compared to the last one I had which was an ACER. It runs faster than it and has 500 GB of memory. I only have a couple of problems with it. You can't set a Power Management Setting when you plug-in or unplug the laptop like my ACER did. For example: If I'm on High Performance plugged in and I need to unplug to go somewhere it would go to a lower setting like Power-saver or even Balanced, but not the Sony Vaio. Yes, you can set a lower brightness monitor setting, but you're still on High Performance. (For those who are not technology savvy, High Performance makes your laptop run at it's best, but consumes a lot more battery power in return).
A major problem I have is the low battery life. On the Power-saver setting I got like almost 2 hours, but with my ACER I got almost like 3 hours and 30 minutes! I also saw on Sony's website you can buy a longer lasting battery separately, but you already paying $1500 for this laptop and they can't give you the best battery?! Sounds like Sony's trying to get greedy and make an extra buck.
I like everything else with this laptop. It hasn't overheated on me and shut-down on me even after playing 4 hours of Left 4 Dead of the highest settings. Great screen, Good processor, Good graphics card, Great memory storage, and runs good.
Great laptop overall.
I call it "The Beast" but it's a good thing. November 9, 2009 G. Picou (Knoxville, TN USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this computer because I wanted something to do HD video editing and photography while traveling. I looked at the specifications for RAM, hard drive, display resolution (1080p)HDMI output, card readers, etc. etc.
I have been a fan of Vaio, so I ordered it.
Then I noticed the screen size. 18.4" Holy cow. Then I received the machine. Holy cow!
It's BIG!
The display is fantastic. The Windows performance is not great, but that I attribute to the fact that it has Vista, and I have high hopes when I install Windows 7 (free upgrade). Running Office programs, Adobe Photoshop and Elements it works fine.
Battery life is nothing to brag about, but 90 minutes is possible if you are careful. You can't have that BIG and BRIGHT a scren, and run for hours, so I can't complain.
I like the Bluetooth capability. I can use a wireless mouse, and not tie up a USB port. I have also used the computer as a Bluetooth speaker phone with my Blackberry, and it works very well in that capacity.
I had to buy a new briefcase, because it will not fit a conventional one. It barely makes the airlines allowable size, but overall it weighs LESS than my 5-year old laptop.
On my desktop I use two screens, but on "The Beast" I have enough room, so it looks like two screens.
So far, I am really happy with this computer (they need a new term, because it is too big to fit on two people's laps.)
